when you have nothing to say
i suggested to a few people that they should start blogging, many who have started blogging and then stopped for a long period of time, they all say the same thing that many other bloggers say "i don't know what to say." this is the big question that plagues many, what is one to say when one has nothing to say?
to this i give a few suggestions for those dry times when you have no thought you feel worthy enough for blog greatness.
- find some strange news website that can give you something to chuckle about. the funny site commentaries show that you have a sense of humor. jonathon likes to use beliefnet & john likes to use larknews. i prefer news of the weird.
- take pictures of your pets and make up some enlightened bs about them. posting things about your pets is internet safe and can make you look like you are a sensitive loving blogger. if you don't have pets just borrow some from google image search. if you feel really dry then make some crazy stuff up about your kid
- talk highly and personally about other bloggers. talking about another blogger or bloggers spreads all kinds of good will and should help to ensure that that person is going to become a reader of yours... in related 'nothing to say' do a bogus interview of one of your blogger friends
- take the test, all the tests.. every single one of them. find out what book you are, how you blog, your color.. want to start the next test that rev mom will have to take?
- you can write a detailed report about the mundane thing you did today. you'd be surprised how interesting it is to other people that your life has insanely boring moments too. also allowed in this segment is to say that you thought of a blog but didn't have time to blog on it (sometimes referred to as the "blogbatical") & giving some painful family story.
- if you comment on other blogs you can repost your comments. bloggin is all about conversation so why not take the conversation home, this doesn't always lead to an extension of the conversation you were in (just as it rarely does in real life) but it does show that you are out there actively thinking and talking, thus alive.
- explain that strange title you have for your blog.. some just need explaining period
- take some pop shots at celebrities, they are always doing something that you can brainlessly talk about.
the last trick of all of this is that if you do one of these regularly then people don't know you are buying time until you have your next original thought.
i hope these ideas help to give you something to blog about when you have nothing to say. feel free to add other ideas in comments.

:)
trouble is I always have something to say (grin)

Read someone elses and link to it as a hat tip.

Go to a blog aggregator like "Nashville Is Talking" and check out other blogs until you find one that you strongly disagree with. Then write your own opinions on that same subject -- whether or not you mention the post to which you're responding depends on the circumstances, but in any case keep it about the issues instead of personalities.

Or write a post advising people on what to do when they have nothing to post. ;-)

this post was such a swell idea. my trouble is that i've always got something to say. it's just that it's not about much. but my faithful 3 or 4 readers continue to appease me.

I'm deeply offended that you would refer to my bs as "enlightened."
Posted by: John | December 30, 2005 at 02:59 PM
john, i think i called the hai-ku enlightened.. the rest of the rabbit bloggin is bs. i hope we can agree on that?
Posted by: gavin | December 31, 2005 at 02:13 AM
No. None of my blogging is enlightened, and all is bs. I go to Asbury, remember?

Since I am one of the people you referred to (as you told me I should start blogging, which I did and then stopped for a long period of time)...thanks for this blog.
Also, check out my most recent stupid entry on google bombing. Oh and by the way, check out the best band ever. ;)

Or as my friend Heather would say, "Quote someone."

I guess I'm just a windbag because I tend to run out of time to blog before I run out of things to blog about.
