i had an interesting experience with my day to day job last night. for those who do not know me that well. i work out of one of the local universities as a community service project. i train and consult with the local child care community. simply put, if you have children that go to day-care, i work with those teachers.
last night i had a training, much like any other training. afterwards though, one of the teachers flagged me over to say something to me. she introduced me to their new teacher and said that she had something to say to me.
what transpired after that was a new chapter view in the world of gavin. the lady exclaimed that she is iranian and is this was the first time she was educated by a man where she didn't have to wear her head coverings. in her broken english she stammered, motioned, and smiled her way through telling me how she is conditioned to always have head dress on in a formal presence of a man. certainly, if the class were taught by a woman this wouldn't have been so profound & to be honest, she probably thought the class was going to be taught by a woman, i am one to three male workers, in my field, in the state of tennessee. it was a simple exchange of her sharing her experience, but for me it is another connection that opens my world that i do not understand. yet, i'll claim to be worldly. her joy of surprise in the freedom we experience is going to stay with me.
