jonathon and i are hitting the road again. like wealways do. this weekend we are leading worship and workshops for our conferences youth ministry institute. we did this last winter & i think the year before that, so this is becoming a staple event. i enjoy hanging out with other ym's so i most certainly enjoy this event. i will only be hanging out into tonight as we have our own youth events tomorrow and this weekend.
look for some pictures of the worship stuff later this weekend.
my last post got picked up by nashville is talking, which is always interesting. katherine made a point that the women were left out of the quotation mix. they were, that is just how the quote went and it was done in jest. i read no harm in not affirming any group or number of people.
i affirm the role of women in ministry and couldn't imagine ministry without them. many of my inspirational moments come from narratives involving the women of the bible (my prayer corner has an icon of the samaritan woman at the well, which is one of my favorite images).
interesting that katherine and i have this conversation as there is an ongoing controversy over another mark driscoll video about church planting where he expresses how the church needs "the man." i first viewed this via michael spencer check it out
i actually did read the first thoughts of this video from andrew. andrew mentions that bill hybels comes back with a "women have gifts too" statement that people cheered too. which, i think, they should after viewing this video segment.
apparently the hybels comment has blown up and people are taking aim on sides of men & women in ministry. todd picks up the conversation being stuck in the middle, the comments are interesting. mark even speaks back to the comment by hybels and his video now being "banned."
andrew follows up by sharing some perspective and dispelling some of the rumors (funny).
Jesus would not have been considered a good youth pastor in most of our evangelical churches. Jesus was obviously willing to give followers the time and space to understand. Too often the expectations is that the youth that come to our churches better know by the end of their first experience with us that Jesus Christ is the Son of the living God.
i actually had another quote in mind to expand on, but this one i stumbled on again this morning. oh well.
it reminded me of mark yaconelli once saying that if when people say we need to get back to the way Jesus did ministry he would go oh great and expand. if you are a youth minister as Jesus was a minister then you run people off, keep only 12 boys to mentor. you would tell them stories that they wouldn't get and you would get frustrated constantly and call them stupid. one would deny even knowing you. another would want to poke at you to see if you were there. one would have a need to see you dead. the rest would run away at the first sign of trouble.
that's youth ministry as Jesus would do it. do you think our churches would stand for that? * i hadn't planned on reading this book, but shane was deeply impacted by it and suggested i read it. he felt so strongly that he sent me a copy. i just opened it last night (after carrying it on and off for months) and just started to fly through it. an excellent read for the staff youth minister and lay youth minister.
